Most American Jews are horrified by the loss of life in Gaza resulting from Israeli bombs. But some of us believe Hamas should share responsibility in loss not just because of Oct 7 but because they didn’t shelter Palestinians in their vast tunnels like Brits sheltered in WWII and aren’t using their huge largesse—many Hamas leaders are billionaires—to assist the Palestinian people. As regards intent to destroy Palestinians—some Israelis want that but not a majority. Any more than trump leads a majority of Americans. Without intent it’s not genocide or ethnic cleansing. Hamas does want total eradication of Jews in Israel. That’s their stated goal. That’s what from the river to the sea means. Do I want killing to stop. Of course and unfortunately neither Netanyahu or Hamas has incentive to stop. Both share blame for the ongoing horror. And we need to recognize this evil complicity rather than blaming one side.
